The Enemy Isn’t Smart—But He Is Consistent

Lately I’ve been reminded of something simple but sobering: the enemy isn’t smart, but he is consistent. He studies our patterns. He knows the places we’ve grown and the few places we’re still tender. And if you’re anything like me, even after doing the deep work of caring more about God’s opinion than man’s, there may still be a couple of voices that can sting more than others.

Recently, I felt a hit right where I’m most tender—the vision God gave me for my coaching business. Someone I used to really trust said something that made me feel small, confused, and for a moment, I questioned my sanity. That’s exactly how the enemy works: not creative, just relentless. He presses on old bruises hoping we’ll flinch.

But God. In that swirl, the Lord broke through: “Megan, focus on Me.” I sat with Him—longer than I “had time” for—asking what was happening. And He answered: trust Me, listen to My voice, replace those lies with My truth. Not everyone will understand your assignment. In fact, Jesus said we would be misunderstood (John 15:18–21). So if you’re feeling it… you may actually be on the right track.

The very next day, confirmation came. My pastor preached about people camping just outside the Promised Land, too afraid to step into the flood. He reminded us of Joshua 3: the priests had to step into the Jordan while it was still at flood stage—and only then did the waters part. Faith steps first. Sight comes second.

So here’s what I’m doing—and what I invite you to do with me.

When the Attack Comes, Try This

1) Pause the swirl

Before you spiral, get still. Breathe. Invite the Holy Spirit into the very thought that feels loud. This interrupts the stress loop your brain is trying to run.

Prayer: “Holy Spirit, I welcome You into this thought. Lead me to the truth.”

2) Name the lie

Write down the exact sentence that hit you. Be specific. Vague fear grows in the dark; named lies lose power in the light.

Examples:

  • “I’m not called.”

  • “My vision is too much.”

  • “Who do I think I am?”

3) Replace it with God’s Word

Truth isn’t positive thinking; it’s the mind of Christ applied to a real situation (2 Corinthians 10:5). Find the Scripture that directly answers the lie.

  • Lie: “I’m not called.”
Truth: “The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:24)

  • Lie: “I need their approval to move forward.”
Truth: “Am I seeking the approval of man or of God?” (Galatians 1:10)

  • Lie: “It’s not safe to step.”
Truth: “When you see the ark move, follow it.” (Joshua 3) — step first, then the waters part.

4) Ask God for your next small step

We don’t need the whole map, just the next obedient step. Write it down and do it today. Don’t wait to feel “ready.” Faith moves while the river is still high.

5) Guard your gates

If certain voices routinely shake you, it’s okay to create distance or limit access for a season. Boundaries are not bitterness; they’re stewardship of your assignment.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

Here’s how this plays out for me:

  • I felt the sting of a comment.

  • I paused and took it to prayer, is this comment from you God for correction or is it from the enemy?

  • I wrote the lie: “Maybe I misheard God about this business.”

  • I answered it with truth: “My sheep hear My voice.” (John 10:27) and “The gifts and calling of God are irrevocable.” (Romans 11:29)

  • I asked for the next small step. He gave me one. I did it—before the feelings caught up.

  • I adjusted my inputs (less room for voices that don’t steward my calling well).

  • Peace returned. Clarity followed.

Not because I’m extra holy, but because God is faithful—and consistency in truth beats the enemy’s consistency in accusation.

If You’re Camped at the River’s Edge…

Maybe you’re camping right outside your promise—watching the river, waiting for it to calm down before you move. Friend, it probably won’t. That’s not how God wrote this story. He invites you to step with Him into the water, and then watch Him make a way.

What’s your one step today?

Don’t wait for the feeling of safety. Move with the voice of God.

A Short Prayer

“Father, thank You that Your voice is my anchor. Expose every lie I’ve agreed with. I repent for elevating human opinion over Your word. Give me courage to step while the river is high, trusting that You will make a way. Establish my steps, steady my heart, and keep me close. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Reflection Prompts

  • What specific lie has felt the loudest lately?

  • Which Scripture speaks directly to it?

  • What is my one small step of obedience I can take today?

  • Which voices need new boundaries in this season?

Keep going. Step first. The waters will part.
